    Evidence for two electronic components in high-temperature superconductivity from NMR

    A new analysis of 63Cu and 17O NMR shift data on La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 is reported that supports earlier work arguing for a two-component description of this material, but conflicts with the widely held view that the cuprates are a one-component system. The data are analyzed in terms of two components A and B with susceptibilities Chi(A), Chi(B), and Chi(AB)=Chi(BA) . We find that above Tc, Chi(AB) and Chi(BB) are independent of temperature and obtain for the first time the temperature dependence of all three susceptibilities above Tc as well as the complete temperature dependence of Chi(AA)+Chi(AB) and of Chi(AB)+Chi(BB) below Tc.     Interactions and magnetic moments near vacancies and resonant impurities in graphene

    The effect of electronic interactions in graphene with vacancies or resonant scatterers is investigated. We apply dynamical mean-field theory in combination with quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which allow us to treat non-perturbatively quantum fluctuations beyond Hartree-Fock approximations. The interactions narrow the width of the resonance and induce a Curie magnetic susceptibility, signaling the formation of local moments. The absence of saturation of the susceptibility at low temperatures suggests that the coupling between the local moment and the conduction electrons is ferromagnetic

    Pointwise convergence of vector-valued Fourier series

    We prove a vector-valued version of Carleson's theorem: Let Y=[X,H]_t be a complex interpolation space between a UMD space X and a Hilbert space H. For p\in(1,\infty) and f\in L^p(T;Y), the partial sums of the Fourier series of f converge to f pointwise almost everywhere. Apparently, all known examples of UMD spaces are of this intermediate form Y=[X,H]_t. In particular, we answer affirmatively a question of Rubio de Francia on the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of Schatten class valued functions.Comment: 26 page

    This paper presents a new control system software development approach entitled, RAPid Modeling and Analysis Philosophy (RAPMAP), and presents an example of the application of this approach on the International Space Station (ISS) program. RAPMAP embraces control system behavior modeling as an integral and ongoing part of the nominal development and integration process. Through a process called ‘Predictive-Verification,’ the RAPMAP approach ensures that development proceeds based on known and demonstrable performance and behavior throughout the development life cycle. The RAPMAP approach provides early identification of system integration issues and support for test and operational procedure development and training long before development products, which normally support these activities, are available. Section 1 of this paper introduces the concept of control system behavior modeling. Section 2 describes the RAPMAP approach and Section 3 provides a description of the the RAPMAP approach including a detailed description of its application on the ISS program. Section 4 summarizes the benefits of the RAPMAP approach

    Field-induced charge symmetry revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance in the topological insulator Bi<sub>2</sub>Te<sub>3</sub>

    Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was recently shown to measure the bulk band inversion of Bi2Se3 through changes in the Bi-209 nuclear quadrupole interaction, and the corresponding tensor of the local electric field gradient was found to follow, surprisingly, the direction of the external magnetic field if the sample is rotated. This manifests a hidden property of the charge carriers in the bulk of this topological insulator, which is explored here with another material, Bi2Te3. It is found that two electric field gradients appear to be present at Bi-209, one rests with the lattice, as usual, while a second follows the external field if it is rotated with respect to the crystal axes. These electronic degrees of freedom and their lifetime is believed to be responsible for an alternate quadrupolar relaxation that should lead to other special properties including the electronic specific heat

    The Evolution of Central Volcanoes in Ultraslow Rift Systems : Constraints From D. Joao de Castro Seamount, Azores

    The Dom Joao de Castro seamount in the Hirondelle Basin (Azores) is a central volcano on the ultraslow diverging Terceira Rift axis. The combination of structural and geochemical data provides insights into the evolution of central volcanoes in oceanic rift systems above the Azores melting anomaly. The orientation of fault scarps and volcanic structures at D. Joao de Castro and the adjacent Castro fissure zone indicate that the regional SW-NE extending stress field dominates the morphology of the NW Hirondelle Basin. The regional tectonic stress field controls the crustal melt pathways and leads to dike emplacement along fissure zones and the prevalent eruption of mafic lavas. The occurrence of mafic to felsic lavas at D. Joao de Castro gives evidence for both a deep and a shallow crustal melt reservoir generating a subordinate local stress field at the seamount. New Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data along with incompatible trace element ratios indicate that D. Joao de Castro and the Castro Ridges originated from similarly heterogeneous mantle source but did not form simultaneously. Our new model implies that central volcanoes along the Terceira Rift form by the growth of volcanic ridges and transitioned into circular edifices after magmatic systems generate local changes in the regional lithospheric stress field. The geometry of D. Joao de Castro and other magmatic systems along the Terceira Rift combined with the alkaline nature of the erupted lavas, and the large lithosphere thickness indicates that young oceanic rifts are more similar to continental rifts rather than mid-ocean ridges.Peer reviewe

    Existence of a monetary steady state is established for a random matching model with divisible goods, indivisible money, and take-it-or-leave-it offers by consumers. There is no restriction on individual money holdings. The background environment is that in papers by Shi and by Trejos and Wright. The monetary steady state shown to exist has nice properties: the value function, defined on money holdings, is increasing and strictly concave, and the measure over money holdings has full support.

    We discretize the shallow water equations with an Adams-Bashford scheme combined with the Crank-Nicholson scheme for the time derivatives and spectral elements for the discretization in space. The resulting coupled system of equations will be reduced to a Schur complement system with a special structure of the Schur complement. This system can be solved with a preconditioned conjugate gradients, where the matrix-vector product is only implicitly given. We derive an overlapping block preconditioner based on additive Schwarz methods for preconditioning the reduced system
